Our Programs

ENGLISH, Maths, SCIENCE (EMS) TUTORING Program

Although some High Schools in Perth offer learning support services to students from non-English speaking backgrounds, research has shown that the many institutions fail to recognise the diversity within African cultures and are not resourced to adjust their learning support services to the different needs African students have.
As a result, many students from minority communities are not engaging with learning and some students are dropping out of the education system altogether.
At Edxcellence we believe tailored education support is the key. Our tutoring programs utilise qualified local role models, who understand the dynamic and cultural backgrounds of students, to provide peer mentoring, with a focus on improving the academic performance of students and developing their passion for learning.
Students who are behind and need support across English, Maths and Science can utilise the services.
We also offer an academic advancement program for students who are well ahead of the year level and wish to accelerate the educational pathway.

Aim High

The Aim Higher Summit (AHS) is an educational outreach initiative designed to promote education among Australian youth from non-English speaking backgrounds on the value of higher education, university pathways, study options and pathways. The inaugural edition happened in 2016 under the auspices of Edith Cowan University and the 2017 event in conjunction with the Organisation of African Communities, Western Australia. The AHS offers a platform where matters relating to education in migrant communities in Perth are discussed. The event brings together successful professionals from non-English speaking backgrounds in various fields to encourage young people to participate in higher education, make informed post-secondary choices and how to best plan their future.

Civic Education

Recent episodes of violence among Australian youth of Black African descent have been a topic of mounting concern for politicians, the police and African communities alike. Research has established a lack of cultural understanding of the Australian way of life as a trigger of violence among African youth in Australia. Therefore, there is a strong need for a fostering civic education and integration of African youth in Australia. Edxcellence works with various organisations such as Constable Care and Organisation of African Communities to promote theatre-based youth violence prevention programs in engaging African youth on crime and violence prevention. The maiden show dubbed “Choose Right” is currently being developed to provide real-time insights on ways of identifying and dealing with triggers of violence among African youth in Australia.

Steve Covey said “Seek first to understand and then to be understood”

At Edxcellence we offer cultural competency training that raises awareness and understanding for those working within the African-Australian communities. Our workshop style programs focuses on building capacity in a non-confronting way and addresses a range of subject areas such as unconscious bias, addressing stereotypes, communication, beliefs, traditions and values across different African cultures. At the end of our programs participants will have a better understanding of different cultural practices, greater sensitivity to adapt and adjust communication styles and confidence in the practical application of knowledge gained in the course.
